Hikarunix
Posted by i7dealer in fun & games 13 years ago
Hikarunix ["hee-kah-roo-nix"] is a Live Linux CD. Any machine that can boot to CD can boot to Hikarunix instead of the computer's regular operating system. Since it boots entirely in RAM and only borrows the peripherals, Hikarunix doesn't touch the host machine at all. Shut the machine down, pop the CD out, reboot and you'll find yourself back with the same old OS that you started with. No installation or partitioning necessary. The fact that it fits on a pocket sized miniCD and can boot on just about any machine makes it extremely portable. Internet cafes, Library computers, a borrowed laptop can all be your personal, temporary Go workstation. If you wish you can also install it to your harddrive.
NY Times Olympics Puzzles

So it's really a late post, but I do puzzle events all the time and this offering from NY Times really was fun. Solve 10 inter-related puzzles about the olympics to answer a meta puzzle at the end.
The unbelievable success of songs like 50 Cent's "In Da Club" and Lil' Kim's "Magic Stick" are proof that 2003 is the worst year on record for music. The current formula? Dumb things down so that we can all relate on the most basic, animalistic level... and to hell with any form of intelligence. Don't believe us? Read this breakdown.

After the events of September 11, newspapers reported an upsurge of patriotism across the land. Americans put stickers on their car windows reading, "United We Stand" and wore T-shirts with images of the American flag. Even on college campuses, students rallied to express patriotic sentiments about America. Sixties boomers, long accustomed to scoffing at patriotism as "flag-waving," now discovered in themselves a surprising urge to wave flags.

A very good article on what it means to feel patriotic to one's country.

The Way

The object of The Way is to get from your start card to your midpoint card, and back again, before your oponent. This is a free two player game that looks pretty damn cool.
Gator denies that it is spyware and will 'take appropriate action' if it is designated as such by other companies. This is a really disturbing news bit for me.
The Game of Craps

When you step into a casino, chances are the table with all the noise and the action will be the one offering the dice-game craps. For some reason, craps either attracts noisy people, or inspires normally subdued people to get very excited. Craps is a fast moving game played with two dice, and is one of the most popular games on offer in the US.

All about craps!

The Laws of Rugby

As I am going to start playing rugby soon, I thought I should get aquainted with the rules. Bizarre, brutal sport. Any game that only lets me where padding to staunch the flow of blood from my body is probably going to hurt like nothing I've ever felt before.
This tool is one of the most helpful things I've found on the internet. Since I've downloading a lot of video lately, I've been very tired of being told that I don't have the right codec, or there is an error playing the file. This application tells you exactly what went wrong, and if you need a codec, it'll tell you which one you're lacking. Sweet.
Here are three very good simultaneous move games that 2 players can play with things you probably already have around your house. I'm a board game freak, these are some very cool games.

Mario Sunshine FAQ

Because I think it's one of the hardest Mario games I've ever played, I had to look at the FAQ for some explanation of what the hell is going on in this game. This is a very good walkthrough.
