Study shows that, regardless of participants' belief in God, simply thinking about God inspires people to be generous and cooperative. Participants in the religious prime group were given a word game and had to unscramble sentences (using spirit, divine, God, sacred and prophet). Those in the control group were given the same task with non-spiritual words. Those primed by thinking about the spiritual terms showed more altruism.
A second study showed almost identical effects were achieved by priming the group with secular terms of civic responsibility and social justice (with target words civic, jury, court, police and contract).
