Where did that bank bailout go? Watchdogs aren't sure government

Although hundreds of well-trained eyes are watching over the $700 billion that Congress last year decided to spend bailing out the nation's financial sector, it's still difficult to answer some of the most basic questions about where the money went.

Despite a new oversight panel, a new special inspector general, the existing Government Accountability Office and eight other inspectors general, those charged with minding the store say they don't have all the weapons they need. Ten months into the Troubled Asset Relief Program, some members of Congress say that some oversight of bailout dollars has been so lacking that it's essentially worthless.

By persuading the Dover, Pa., school board to teach creationism, Christian zealots have provoked a showdown over the status of not just evolutionary theory, but science itself.

"This country wasn't founded on Muslim beliefs or evolution," Bill Buckingham, a stocky, gray-haired man who wears a red, white and blue crucifix pin on his lapel, said at the meeting. "This country was founded on Christianity, and our students should be taught as such."

"I do not find in our particular superstition of Christianity one redeeming feature."
-Thomas Jefferson

"The doctrine of the divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for absurdity."
-John Adams

"It is the duty of every true Deist to vindicate the moral justice of God against the evils of the Bible."
-Thomas Paine

"A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate liberty, does not need the clergy."
-James Madison

"Religion and government will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together."

Sacred Pie Web Comic it's the arts

Sacred Pie is my favorite Web Comic. It is usually a pen-and-ink style of drawing, with occasional well-done forays into flash episodes.

The comic is very violent, and maintains a good overall sense of storyline. I read the entire backlog while slacking at work one day, and now I eagerly anticipate each the week's new installment.

How to Win at Playing Retirement Catch-Up the biz
Link #148869 submitted by johnny2000 on Dec 22, 2009 09:32am.   (+150XP)
http://finance.yahoo.com/focus-retirement/article/108412/how-to-win...
Consider this, if you have doubts about any lingering damage to your retirement savings from the financial crisis: Although stocks are up more than 60 percent since March, the 401(k) of a typical boomer at the same company for at least 10 years is still worth less than it was two years ago -- even with additional contributions over that period and employer matches. No surprise, then, that a recent AARP study found that 42 percent of boomers are now worried that they won't have enough money to retire comfortably.

The only way to ensure that your nest egg will be big enough is to ramp up your savings in a major way -- you can't count on continuing 60 percent-plus gains in stocks to bail you out.

Enter Uncle Sam with a big helping hand: giving anyone 50 and older the chance to make catch-up contributions to retirement accounts, above the limits for younger savers. Though the rules have been in place since 2002, only 13 percent of people who are eligible take advantage of them, according to the Vanguard Center for Retirement Research. Aim to become part of that elite group.

US Economy Saved by Manicurists! gods
Link #40439 submitted by maximus on Feb 22, 2004 08:45pm.   (+235XP)
http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2004/02/saved_by_manicu.html
Some conservative commentators have put forth the phony idea that the Payroll jobs data is bad, and that the economy has created several million jobs.

They create this fiction by relying upon a diffewrent measure, the Household survey. Indeed, in the NYTimes today one quasi economics nerd even suggested that it was manicurists and massage therapists which will help right our listing economy.

The problem is, their analysis is just wrong:
“Unfortunately for the optimists, the Federal Reserve has just thrown cold water on the household data. It concludes that the gloomy payroll data is essentially accurate and that the household survey is probably off base.

"I wish I could say the household survey were the more accurate,'' Alan Greenspan, the Fed chairman, said in his testimony at a House hearing on Feb. 11. "Everything we've looked at suggests that it's the payroll data which are the series which you have to follow.''

This has become a political issue for President Bush, and how it is resolved will determine whether he shares his father's fate -- a one termer or not.

office space meets memento strangely funny
Link #66640 submitted by joyride on Nov 19, 2004 03:24pm.   (+285XP)
http://winkyshock.blogspot.com
A shut-your-office-door-so-they-don't-hear-you-laughing glimpse into the daily frustrations and... frustrations of life at Winkyshock, Inc.

Coffee is prohibited, before it's mandatory. The (suspiciously pale) interns on the Diversity Augmentation program have nothing to do, because no one wants to be in charge of them. The boss' incompetent nephew Roger is a middle manager who breaks from his video games in the corner office once in a while to torment the cubicle dwellers with inane theories and dumb questions.

Cranky heroine MG and her mild-mannered (and possibly smitten) co-sufferer Jay survive a well-meaning busybody, a suck-up admin, and a vicious rumor-spreading back-stabber.

Meanwhile, witchy departmental director Nina is getting suspicious deliveries, flamboyant Vinnie just wants a little peace, and no one can quite manage to keep the water cooler full.

Told in reverse chronology, with funny surprises whether you read backwards or forwards.

Sometimes outlandish, but more often you'll find yourself wincing in recognition when it hits a little too close to home. Get lost in the recent archives and kiss the afternoon goodbye.

Puijila: A Prehistoric Walking Seal blinded by science

The evolutionary story of seals is rewritten by a new fossil from Canada's High Arctic.

This prehistoric animal represents a "missing link"—a branch on an evolutionary tree—between an ancestor that walked on land and today's sea-going seals and their relatives.
